MacDuff, Joseph Honore

MacDUFF, Joseph Honore (1868-1918) was a successful and prolific Montreal architect who practiced there from 1892 under his own name and then in partnership with Ludger Lemieux from 1897 until his death. He was born at Longueuil, Que. on 12 January 1868 and was a descendant of Scottish ancestors who had settled in the Montreal area in the early 19th century. He was the son of Eustache MacDuff and Malvina Brissette and received his education at both St. Henri College and at Bishop's Academy in Montreal. After serving a three year apprenticeship under J.H. Bernard from 1887 to 1890, he went to Toronto where he studied architecture under a private tutor for two years.

He opened his Montreal office in early 1892 and by 1895 he had completed buildings valued at over half a million dollars. In March 1897 he formed a partnership with Ludger Lemieux (C.A.B., x, May 1897, 90) and together with him completed many commissions for ecclesiastical, commercial and residential works, often executed in a highly eclectic style. Their designs appear as orthodox products of their time, never progressive, and are undistinguished by the refinements of scholarship which a younger generation of Montreal designers such as J.O. Marchand and Eugene Payette had begun to introduce before WWI. MacDuff died at l'Annunciation, Que. on 1 March 1918 and his partner continued the practice under the title of L. & P.M. Lemieux, Architects (death notice in La Presse [Montreal, 4 March 1918, 13; Le Devoir [Montreal], 5 March 1918, 2; biog. and port. in Rev. W. Cochrane, Canadian Album: Men of Canada, ii, 1893, 440). A major collection of architectural drawings prepared by the firm of MacDuff & Lemieux between 1897 and 1918 can be found in the L. & P.M. Lemieux Collection held at the the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.
