Blake, Henry

BLAKE, Henry (1788-1853) was recorded as "the Architect” from Woodstock, New Brunswick who prepared the design for the new Baptist Church in Woodstock, N.B. in 1846 (The Head Quarters [Fredericton], 19 Aug. 1846, 3, descrip.). This church stood for nearly 40 years until it was destroyed in the Great Fire in Woodstock in 1881, and was later replaced with a new church designed by David Dunham of Saint John, N.B. Blake was born in Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire on 22 January 1788 and moved to Canada in 1812, a decision likely prompted by the events of the War of 1812. He settled in New Brunswick and worked in the building trades in Carleton County. He was among the first professional architects who was active in western New Brunswick, and his name may be linked to many other residential and ecclesiastical works from c.. 1840 until after 1850. He died in Woodstock on 8 January 1853.
