COMPETITIONS

MONTREAL, QUE., Liverpool, London & Globe Insurance Co., Place d'Armes at St. James Street, 1901. S.A. Finley was one of six architects invited to submit designs for this large office building (Gazette [Montreal], 7 Aug. 1901, 5; C.R., xii, 14 Aug. 1901, 3). The firm of Hutchison & Wood was later declared as the winner.
MONTREAL, QUE., new clubhouse for the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, Peel Street, 1903. The entry submitted by Finley & Spence was declared as the Second Prize winner, and David R. Brown was given First Premium. However, his design proved far too costly for the M.A.A.A. budget, and the commission was later handed to Finley & Spence (Gazette [Montreal], 17 Nov. 1903, 2; Montreal Daily Star, 17 Nov. 1903, 2)
MONTREAL, QUE., Medical Faculty Building, McGill University, Pine Avenue, 1907. Eight local Montreal architectural firms were invited to submit a design for the major educational building (Gazette [Montreal], 22 July 1907, 3). The design by Finley & Spence was set aside in favour of the winning scheme by Brown & Vallance.
OTTAWA, ONT., Departmental & Justice Buildings, Major's Hill Park, 1907. Finley & Spence were among thirty entrants in this national competition. They submitted two designs, the first, marked 'No. 5', was ranked 8th out of thirty schemes, but was criticized because '.....the exterior is much less ornate than what might be expected from the plans, and [it] lacks character'. Their second scheme, marked 'No. 4', was ranked 16th out of thirty proposals; it too was set aside because '.....the cost of erection would be excessive'. The competition was won by another Montreal firm E. & W.S. Maxwell, but their winning design was never built.
