Eliasoph, Milton

ELIASOPH, Milton (1908-1994), active in Montreal, Que. in the following offices:

M. Eliasoph, Architect, 1933
Eliasoph & Greenspoon, Architects, 1934-1944
M. Eliasoph, Architect, 1945-47

He was born in Montreal on 25 June 1908 and enrolled in the Arts programme at McGill University in 1925, but later transferred to the Dept. of Architecture and graduated in 1932. One of his classmates was Henry E. Greenspoon, with whom he later formed a partnership. Eliasoph received his early training in the office of C. Davis Goodman (in 1928), and with Philip Turner (in 1929), and with J.E.C. Daoust in 1932. In 1934 both he and H.E. Greenspoon announced the formation of a new partnership in Montreal (R.A.I.C. Journal, xi, July-Aug. 1934, 124). Their collaboration ended in 1944, and Eliasoph worked alone until 1948 when he invited Saul M. Berkowitz to form a new partnership which remained active for nearly 30 years until 1979. Their major works include the massive Pollack Department Store in Quebec City (1950-51), and the Westgate Shopping Centre in Ottawa, Ont. (1954-55), one of first postwar outdoor shopping complexes to be built in the National Capital Region. Eliasoph retired in 1979 and later died in Chattanooga, Tennessee on 11 May 1994 (obituary in Gazette [Montreal], 13 May 1994, 11; biog. in L. Noppen et al, Quebec Monumental 1890-1990, pub. 1990, 180; biog. and port in the Old McGill Yearbook, Vol. 35, 1932, p. 81).
