Moore, Oliver Roy

MOORE, Oliver Roy (1890-1964), son of John M. Moore, a leading architect in London, Ont., was born there on 7 June 1889 and educated in public and high schools there. He had no formal education in architecture, choosing instead to serve an apprenticeship in his father's office, then called Moore & Henry, from c. 1907 until 1918 when he was made a full partner in the firm. When his father was elected Mayor of London in 1926 and again in 1927 much of the design work in the firm passed to his son. After the death of his father in June 1930, Roy Moore continued to operate the office under the name of J.M. Moore & Co., but the plans for virtually every commission after this date can be attributed to the younger Moore. He can be credited with several landmarks on the campus of the University of Western Ontario including the competent Collegiate Gothic designs for Lawson Memorial Library (1934), Thames Hall (1949) and for Huron College (1949-50). He retired from the profession in 1958 and died in London, Ont. on 11 March 1964 (obit. Free Press [London], 11 March 1964, 29; R.A.I.C. Journal, xli, April 1964, 10; biog. R. Hamilton, Prominent Men of Canada, 1931-32, 67; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects; inf. Charles Addington, London). The D.B. Weldon Library at the Univ. of Western Ontario holds an extensive collection of drawings by Roy Moore which form part of the John M. Moore Collection.
