COMPETITIONS

LONDON, ENGLAND, Soane Medallion Competition, for the Royal Inst. of British Architects, 1890. Rattenbury was one of a number of young architects who submitted plans for a "Design for a Public Day School". The jury declined to award the Medallion to any scheme, and granted three Merit awards to others. Rattenbury was not among the finalists, but his design was later published in The British Architect [London], xxxiii, 28 March 1890, 224ff, and 4 April 1890, 242-43, illus. These drawings have been reproduced in A. Barrett & R. Liscombe, Francis Rattenbury and British Columbia, 1983, 18, 20, 22-3, illus.
OXFORD, ENGLAND, Town Hall, 1892. Rattenbury assisted with the design and competition drawings sent in by the Bradford firm of Mawson & Hudson. Over 130 architects submitted plans, and the drawings by Rattenbury were "highly recommended" by the juror Thomas E. Collcutt (Vancouver Daily World, 18 March 1893, 8). However, their scheme was not included in the selection of the five finalists, and their entry was passed over in favour of the winner Henry T. Hare of London.
VANCOUVER, B.C., Masonic Temple, Granville Street, 1893. Rattenbury prepared a set of drawings for this building in February 1893 (Vancouver Daily World, 13 Feb. 1893, 3). His design was not among the finalists.
OLYMPIA, WASH. State Capitol Buildings, entry in the first competition, 1894, and entry in the second competition, 1903. Rattenbury was among dozens of architects who sent in plans, but his entry was not premiated, and Wilder & White of New York City were later declared the winners (Vancouver Daily World, 20 March 1894, 3).
VANCOUVER, B.C., major addition to the Hotel Vancouver, 1900. Rattenbury was one of six architects from British Columbia who were invited by the C.P.R. head office in Montreal to submit designs for a new hotel (Province [Vancouver], 15 Oct. 1900, 7). The winner was F.M. Rattenbury, but this announcement was not made until February 1901 (Victoria Daily Times, 20 Feb. 1901, 7; and 21 Feb. 1901, 3, descrip.)
REGINA, SASK., Provincial Parliament Building, 1907. Seven architectural firms from the United States and Canada were invited to prepare designs. Rattenbury was paid $1,500 to submit his proposal (Vancouver Daily World, 3 Sept. 1907, 17). His classically-inspired design was set aside in favour of the winning entry by E. & W.S. Maxwell of Montreal. The original drawings by Rattenbury have survived, and are now held at the Saskatchewan Archives Board in Regina. These drawings are reproduced in A. Barrett & R. Liscombe, Francis Rattenbury and British Columbia, 1983, 210-12, Fig. 6.27 - 6.34, illus.
